Probably just like you my first encounter with Bayonetta was when Sega first started to release promotional pictures of their new gaming heroine. I can’t say I was particularly thrilled; not because I thought Bayonetta was unattractive or anything, but rather I personally don’t find that promotional material designed to tickle the naughty parts of my brain actually does so.

So what is Planet 51 about? You take control of Lem; a geeky teenage Alien boy interested in Astronomy. To begin with you’re faced with a number of menial duties such as mowing your neighbours back lawn and taking your mother’s car to the garage. To make things worse the local bully is picking on Lem a bit and of course the girl he fancies from school isn’t really interested in such a no hoper. All of that is about to change when Chuck, a human, lands on Lem’s home planet (Planet 51) and causes and almighty ruckus.

All of us have played a time waster game at some point in our lives. Maybe it was Tetris on the Gameboy or perhaps more recently Peggle on your iPhone. One thing for certain is that even the most core of gamers love a bit of light-hearted high score based gaming in between bouts of Modern Warfare 2 or any other hit game you’d like to mention. Diner Dash has been a huge success since its release in 2003 as a simple PC flash game and can now be found on more than 12 different platforms.

When I first started playing Madballs in Babo Invasion I was describing it to myself as Super Monkey Ball – but with guns. I then found out that Madballs is in fact a sequel to the free webgame called Babo Violent 2. I think this means that this is the third game in the series but the first with the Madballs licence, all a bit confusing isn’t it?

For reference the last tennis game I played most recently was Sega Superstars Tennis for Wii and whilst it was fun it neither managed to recapture the initial fun of Wii Sports Tennis nor the typical Nintendo charm found in Mario Tennis. As much as I like Sonic and his friends they just don’t have the same level of personality as Mario and his pals do but maybe I’m just being a biased Nintendo fanboy. Anyway I digress.

Stormrise is a futuristic themed real time strategy game for the Xbox 360. Hardened console fans will know that RTS games don’t normally transfer too well to a system which doesn’t have a keyboard or mouse but the clever people from The Creative Assembly (developers of Empire Total War) were quite determined to banish that stereotype and create a fully functional RTS for a console that wasn’t impaired by a joypad being the control mechanism for the game.
The Story for Stormrise is actually pretty good and I could easily see it being adapted for a movie. Basically what has happened is that mankind has got too big for its boots (as usual) and after developing a new energy system and force field to protect the Earth from any effects of global warming things predictably went wrong, huge great Storms appeared and started devastating the planet. Instead of trying to fix it, all of the rich and important people (as well as the military) sealed themselves away underground for years and years hoping wake up from their stasis to world renewed by Mother Nature. Well sadly things didn’t work out that smoothly.

I have memories of playing the Original OutRun at the local amusement arcades many years ago when I was a smaller and less hairy young boy. I also remember a couple of years later getting a copy of OutRun for the Amiga which wasn’t a brilliant port of the arcade game at least let me play the game without having to shove lots of silver coins into a greedy gaming machine whilst the grinning amusement owner looked on and planned how to spend my pocket money later that week.
