Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games Review – Nintendo DS

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics DS ScreenshotAs you’d expect from the title you take control of Mario and Sonic; however it’s not all about Speed Skating and gold medals here. If you’d have thought something as giant and complex as the Winter Olympic Games could go without a hitch then you’re a dummy because if you think about it just for a moment then you’d realise that there is just so much that can go wrong. In this instance though what goes wrong isn’t quite what you or I would have expected. Rather than the typical type of things like Olympic Athletes being struck down by food poisoning or being suspected of drug misuse, in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games things are much worse. Who else but the evil Dr Eggman and Bowser have decided to cause trouble.

Hasbro Family Game Night Review – Nintendo DS

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

hasbro family game night packshotYes I’m a video gamer but I’m not un-partial to the odd board game or two but I admit that my Scrabble board hasn’t seen the light of day since the official Scrabble app arrived on Facebook. As well as playing computer and video games since an early age I have always liked board games, some of my favourites include classics such as: Monopoly, Chess and the aforementioned Scrabble. So as you can imagine, when Hasbro Family Game Night for Nintendo DS arrived for review I wasn’t too displeased.

Build A Lot Review – Nintendo DS

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

build a lot screenshotFor a couple of weeks I was waiting for a fun little title to play on my DSi in bed and I was quite pleased when Build-A-Lot arrived for review. So the aim of the game is to progress from being a newbie property developer to America’s greatest (and richest) property tycoon. On the offset I agree that a property building game doesn’t sound that much fun; that’s because being a real property developer is quite a horrid prospect for most people. What you have to remember is that this is a game and as such, it’s been designed with fun in mind with nothing to bog you down. From the start Build-A-Lot throws you into the action rather than get you doing any of the boring stuff like searching for land, getting it surveyed and dealing with all the legal bullplop.

Nintendo DSi Hardware Review

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

dsiWith combined sales of around 100 million Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS lites one would wonder if Nintendo needed to develop a third iteration of their dual screen money printing machine but they have done it anyway. Have Nintendo improved on the already popular DSlite enough to warrant a new model and an increase in price? We’ll find out in my review of the Nintendo DSi.

Demntium: The Ward – DS

Monday, April 27th, 2009

sp_dementiumpackaging_ukvMaybe I’m just lucky but I’ve never had to stay in hospital other than the time when I was actually being born and I don’t really think that counts. However after staying for a week in a virtual hospital full of monsters on my new DSi the experience has put me right off my upcoming sense of humour reduction surgery. Dementium The Ward is a survival horror first person shooter for DS.

DSi initial impressions

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

My two DS lites sold on eBay in just a few days priced at £75 each (both were bundled with two games). With the money in the bank I went to Toys R Us who are currently selling the DSi for £135 (about £15 cheaper than most UK retailers).

I’ve only had a few hours with it but thought I’d share my initial impressions and do a full review later.

So firstly the new Matte finish looks nice but feels rather odd and in my opinion is step back from the DS Lite’s shiny coating which may have shown smeary fingerprints but felt rather pleasant. The DSi’s onscreen keyboard has been incorrectly designed and unlike the Wii’s keyboard layout the DSi has many essential characters missing for true ASCII super strength password. It’s great to see that WPA and WPA2 (TKIP and AES) encryption are supported even if you may have to lower your passwords strength to use it.

The DSi menu system is now very Wii like and much more pleasing to the eye, elements of the old DS software still remain (Pictochat and Download Play) and now look quite dated in comparrison.

The DS shop channel works much like the Wii shop channel and the free 1000 point sign up gift is very welcome, currently only a handful of games are available along with the free Opera Internet Browser to download. The Opera Browser isn’t too bad, web pages take between 10 and 30 seconds to load which is comparable to many lower spec mobile phones – as usual Opera have done a great job in making sure pages render well on a small screen.

The Music and Camera applications are fun, nicely presented but limited – sadly I can’t see myself using them all to often but it’s nice that the support is there.

I currently think the DSi is a little overpriced, especially if you are upgrading from a DS Lite. I think DS Phat owners will be more impressed by taking the jump past the Lite and into the DSi. If you’re new to the DS then I would recommend the DSi purely because it has more scope to the future with downloadable games etc, however if you only ever see yourself buying retail games then the DS Lite might be your first choice.

A full review to follow later.

Selling my Nintendo DS Lites

Monday, April 6th, 2009

I’m selling my 2 Black Nintendo DS lites on eBay but don’t worry I’m not quitting DS reviews.  Instead I plan to use the funds raised to purchase a DSi.  The DSi is the most recent iteration of the Nintendo DS which has more features for you to play around with.  Thankfully I don’t need to worry about the lack of GBA slot as I only have one GBA game (Mario Tennis) and I don’t play it anymore.

Here’s the trailer for the new Nintendo DSi just in case you’ve not seen it already.

You know I’m starting to wonder if I’m allowed to actually buy a DSi, everyone in that trailer is wearing all white and smiling. I only ever wear blue and black clothes and never smile.
